Chapter Sixteen

Joe Dunkin’

Luck is with me the next day, even though the first word out of my mouth when I wake up is ‘crap.’

Yeah, I forgot to call Allison and ask if she can use her distant seeing to locate Ethan using his journal as a focus. However, since I now know he likely ended up at a hospital, I’m going to try doing things the normal way first. Something about this situation makes me hesitant to mix psychics and Ethan. Specifically, that octopus-headed statue. I dunno, watching the thin-faced man lose his grip on sanity the instant he touched it gives me pause. If there’s even a small chance Allison might open herself to whatever this thing is by reaching out to find him, it’s not worth the risk.

The donut holes went over well. Not the healthiest breakfast, but neither are waffles. Once I’m back from dropping Paxton off at school, I hit the phone and start calling around to hospitals in the area, asking if they’ve admitted any unconscious John Does with stab wounds fitting Ethan Hedley’s description.

My third call, to West Anaheim Medical Center, results in a maybe. They had a John Doe come in five days ago described as a brown-haired white male around thirty—a pretty vague description that could fit millions. Of course, he suffered an abdominal laceration, which makes him a lot more likely to be Ethan. Not getting my hopes up, but I might as well check it out.
